Pond constructed for snow making use at Hunter Mountain

Prior to hiring a contractor and starting construction on a pond, landowners are advised to have a good understanding of the factors that will make to difference between a nice pond and a big dry hole. Upon a landowners request, GCSWCD technical staff can arrange a visit to your property to determine if your site is suitable for a pond. The GCSWCD will evaluate the proposed pond location, water sources, soils and out flow drainage features. Private ponds have a long tradition in American culture. Whether constructed for simple aesthetics, wildlife enhancement or for more utilitarian uses such as watering livestock, the private pond has an almost mystical allure. In todays fast paced world, there is nothing as special as a secluded farm pond which is mature and teeming with wildlife.

Since the inception of the Greene County Soil & Water Conservation District in 1961, we have assisted in the development and management of hundreds of ponds in Greene County. Using constriction standards and specifications developed by the USDA, the District has a long tradition of pond building.

While funding and staffing limitations no longer allow for us to design or construct ponds for landowners, we do continue to provide technical assistance and fish stocking services to assist landowners with managing their ponds. The following links will lead you to a wealth of information on ponds and their management and will hopefully assist you with the enjoyment of your pond.
