Volunteer "Plant-a-thon" at the Big Hollow Project

On Saturday November 10th and Sunday the 11th, the GCSWCD was joined by a large group of friends and supporters for a weekend of planting at the Big Hollow Stream Project. The idea of a planting weekend was suggested and developed by Trout  Unlimited and the GCSWCD to give interested parties an opportunity to participate in the restoration effort.  Outreach to volunteer groups who are concerned with stream system health is a priority of the GCSWCD and the NYCDEP Stream Management Programs.

During the planting weekend, volunteers tied over 2000' live willow fascines and 500 live stakes which were planted along the recently completed restoration project. Volunteers also planted 8,000 bare root Silky/RedOsier Dogwood, Streamco Willows and Hybrid Poplar seedlings on the adjoining floodplain. The volunteers covered a significant portion of the project, with plantings completed on over 4 acres of floodplain along a 1/2 mile stretch of the Batavia Kill Stream.

During the weekend, over 70 volunteers participated in the planting under crisp blue skies. Assisting the District, were members of the Catskill Mountain and Clear Water Chapters of Trout Unlimited, Americorp members from Delhi and Poughkeepsie, a Boy Scout group from New York City, Staff from several state agencies including NYSDOT and NYSDEC, members of the NYCDEP Stream Management Program, GCSWCD Staff, the Saugerties High School Science Club  and others.  In many cases, the day became a family affair with parents and children working side by side.

The GCSWCD extends its most sincere appreciation to all those who helped with the plantings at Big Hollow. Continue to visit our website to keep abreast of stream restoration efforts in the Catskills.
