Stream Stewardship Program

Japanese Knotweed

A long-term monitoring project of several Japanese knotweed stands along the Batavia Kill was initiated in 2003.  The knotweed monitoring plots were identified and their perimeters were marked with rebar and mapped using a GPS system.  The main goal of the monitoring project is to study the potential growth and expansion of knotweed stands in varied conditions and settings along the Batavia Kill.  In 2003, the vegetative species within each plot were identified and recorded and each stand was photographed.

In 2004, the size of each knotweed stand was monitored, and the perimeters of the stands that had expanded were marked with rebar.  The size of monitoring plots will continue to be monitored yearly for the duration of the study, while the composition of  vegetative communities will be monitored less frequently.
