Japanese Knotweed |

The GCSWCD, NYCDEP and Hudsonia Ltd. are working together on a project, along the Batavia Kill, to determine an effective treatment method for Japanese knotweed. We will be testing three experimental treatment methods for their effectiveness at managing stands of knotweed; these methods include, 1)frequent mowing, 2) limited excavation with planting of native species and a weed barrier around the trees, and 3) herbicide injection. |
There are 16 plots, each treatment will be applied to four plots, and four will remain as control plots. Plot preparation was completed by GCSWCD and NYCDEP staff in fall 2004. The plots are 5m x 5m and are surrounded by a 2-3ft. trench, lined with a weed barrier to reduce the effects from vegetation outside of the plots. Implementation of the experimental treatment methods will begin in May 2005. We plan to use the results of this study to develop a brochure for landowners, providing them with information on effective management and treatments for knotweed on private property. |
