Watershed
Description

The Stony Clove Watershed is shared by Greene and Ulster Counties.  Approximately 80% of the watershed falls in the Greene County towns of Hunter and Lexington.  The remaining 20% is within the Ulster County towns of Shandaken and Woodstock.

The Stony Clove Creek begins after the deep Stony Clove Notch between Hunter Mountain and Plateau Mountain.  The Creek runs down the valley for 10.2 miles, jumping back and forth across State Highway 214 several times.  Warner's Creek, the largest tributary enters the Stony Clove Creek just before Chichester.  The Stony Clove Creek joins the Esopus Creek in Phoenicia.  The Esopus eventually empties into the Ashokan Reservior, which supplies New York City with approximately 10% of its drinking water.

Water Resources

The Stony Clove Creek has sixteen tributaries varying in size.  The largest is Warner Creek, which is approximately 7 miles long.  Warner Creek begins at Plateau Mountain and runs along Silver Hollow Road until it enters the Stony Clove Creek.  Other tributaries include Hollow Tree Brook and Myrtle Brook.

While there are no state wetlands mapped inside the watershed, there are approximately 91 acres of federal wetlands.
