The District has sub-divided the West Kill stream into a series of designated reaches. Each reach was delineated strictly based on known landmarks which would be familiar to the residents of the watershed. The limits of each project reach are not associated with either the stream classification or the identification of unstable reaches.  Stream reaches start at the bottom of the West Kill watershed , at the confluence with the Schoharie Creek, and extend up the stream. The stream system has also been divided into the Lower Watershed, Schoharie Creek to NYS 42 Bridge at West Kill (L-01 through L-02) and the Upper watershed, NYS 42 Bridge at West Kill to the headwaters (U-01 through U-04).

In the following section, you will find a brief summary of the District's preliminary findings regarding the state of the West Kill.  These reach summaries are based on observations of stream features, as well as information regarding past flood events and stream projects.  The District has become very familiar with the West Kill due to its many problems over the past 12 years. We have conducted numerous site visits, provided assistance to Greene County Highway Dept. in regards to stream problems, and conducted a number of stream walkovers.
