Schoharie Watershed Month 2011

Celebrating the beauty and natural resources of the Schoharie basin through entertaining, hands-on activities for the whole family!

Over 400 Mountaintop residents and visitors came out during the month of May to take part in
the Greene County Soil & Water Conservation District Stream Management Program’s 2nd
Annual Schoharie Watershed Month. As a celebration of the region’s beauty and natural
resources, Schoharie Watershed Month included a variety of free public activities and events
focused on watershed protection and appreciation.

The 2nd Annual Schoharie Watershed Month took place during the entire month of May 2011
and included nature walks, stream clean-ups, invasive species protection activities, streamside
native plantings, interactive workshops, and an Environmental Film Series. Elementary and high
school students from Hunter-Tannersville Central, Gilboa-Connesville Central, and several New
York City schools took part in protecting the Schoharie watershed by removing over 60 bags of
garbage from streams and planting over 1,200 trees to help vegetate streambanks. Additional
agencies and businesses that partnered with the District for Watershed Month include the
Catskill Center for Conservation & Development, Catskill Watershed Corporation, Cornell
Cooperative Extension, Watershed Agricultural Council, Hunter Mountain, Schoharie River
Center, Windham Arts Alliance, Community of Windham Foundation, Mountain Top
Arboretum, and Mountain Top Historical Society.
