Sugar Maples Stream Restoration Volunteer Planting

Students from NYC, Jefferson, and Gilboa Come Together for a Planting

Student volunteers and GCSWCD and DEP staff at the Sugar Maples plantingOn May 14, 2010, Greene County Soil & Water Conservation District in partnership with Catskill Streams Buffer Initiative, Council on the Environment of New York City, NYC DEP, and the Catskill Watershed Corporation brought together students from Manhattan Comprehensive Night and Day High School, Jefferson Central and Gilboa-Conesville Central School District for a riparian buffer planting project.

The students planted 250 native Catskill trees and shrubs, 7 willow fascines, 1584 herbaceous plugs, and 340 willow stakes at the Sugar Maples Stream Restoration Project in Maplecrest. The students enjoyed a wonderful day at Sugar Maples, learned about stream restoration, native plants, and bioengineering techniques.
