Mountaintop Community Recreation, Cultural Resources, & Scenic Quality Strategy

The Northern Catskills are a significant resource for recreational activities. For generations people have come to the “Mountaintop” to enjoy the great outdoors, to ski, visit historic and cultural sites, and admire the idyllic scenery.

The Mountaintop Community Recreation, Cultural Resources, and Scenic Quality Strategy is a region-wide planning effort to develop a locally driven comprehensive master plan that will proactively address the long-term stewardship and protection of the famed Catskill resources that have attracted people to the area for generations.  At the same time the project will seek to maintain the economic viability of the small, rural mountaintop communities that rely on these resources to attract tourists to the area.

The Strategy will be focused on the nine mountaintop municipalities including: Ashland, Jewett, Halcott, Town of Hunter, Village of Hunter, Lexington, Prattsville, Village of Tannersville, and  Windham.  Within these communities the historical, recreational, arts and cultural, & scenic resources will be inventoried.  Opportunities for resource enhancement and integration will be explored for the betterment of the communities.

Example enhancements could include:

¨ Headliner concerts being held on the mountaintop

¨ Snowmobile trail mapping and connection

¨ Bike lane development on area roads

¨ Linking historic resources in the region for a more cohesive portrayal of the history of the northern Catskills
