Waterfront Revitalization Program

Athens Waterfront

Revitalization

Project

In 1996, the District was asked by the Village of Athens for assistance with the revitalization of the Village’s waterfront area. With increasing interest in the Hudson Valley as a tourism destination, and transient boating on the river steadily increasing, many communities are looking to their historic waterfronts as a source of economic vitality. In 1998, the GCSWCD completed a Phase I feasibility study which initially focused on the historic waterfront ferry slip, and was later expanded to include the adjacent riverfront park.

As a result of the Phase I study, the District and the Village of Athens obtained additional funding for Phase II activities to include development of final engineering documents, regulatory permits, a detailed work plan, final budget and additional grant applications for implementation. Final design documents will be completed by the end of 2003, and the Village hopes to have adequate funds for construction in 2004.
