Watershed
Management

As the focus has moved from point source pollution to non-point sources of  pollution, the role of the watershed scale assessment and management has become increasingly important.

In response to state and federal initiatives addressing water quality on a watershed basis, the District has initiated a number of projects related to watershed management.  The Districts goal is to provide the resources necessary to have Greene County watersheds benefit from on-going initiatives by NYSDEC or the EPA.

Hudson River Estuary Program

The District is a member of the HREMP Advisory Committee and has been working with NYSDEC and other districts to promote a broader emphasis on the watersheds in the Hudson River estuary. In 2000, the District expects to continue to assist with the HREMP and hope to be able to pilot a watershed scale project examining the impact of tributary sediment supply on the estuary.

Sleepy Hollow Lake Watershed Management Plan

In 1998, the District initiated a project in partnership with the Sleepy Hollow Lake Association of Property Owners (APO).  Located in the Towns of Athens & Coxsackie, Sleepy Hollow Lake is a large manmade lake which is the centerpiece of a private residential community. Located in a watershed that is characterized by glacial laquesterine soils,  SHL has always experienced problems with turbidity.  Over the next few years, the GCSWCD will work with SHL to develop a comprehensive lake management plan which will address issues both within and outside of the community. Protection of water quality, resource protection, and management of the lakes structures will all be included in the management plan. The APO and GCSWCD is currently seeking public and private funding to facilitate the development of the management plan.

At the present time, the District has several projects involving watershed management in conjunction with stream restoration efforts. To learn more about these projects, visit our Stream Restoration page

Source Water Assessment
Program (SWAP)

In the coming years, the District will assist NYS Dept. of Health with implementation of the SWAP program in Greene County Watersheds. SWAP is a requirement set forth under the Safe Drinking Water Act, and it will provide an assessment of drinking water watersheds to various pollution risks and development of mitigation and protection plans.
