3rd Annual Schoharie Watershed Month May 2012
Celebrating the beauty and natural resources of the Schoharie basin through entertaining, hands-on activities for the whole family!
Schoharie Watershed Month provided a variety of free public activities and events focused on watershed protection and appreciation.
The annual stream clean-up was a success. Participants included Sharon Sofranko's 5th and 6th grade science classes from the Hunter-Tannersville School District, and Hunter Mountain employees Randy Hoose, Steve Laing, and Eric Johnson.
Activities and Events
Septic Workshop for Homeowners The Catskill Watershed Corporation presented a workshop for homeowners followed by a tour of the Windham Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP).
Introduction to Trail Maintenance Workshop The NY-NJ Trail Conference and Mountain Top Historical Society held a one-day session teaching the skills needed to maintain a hiking trail. Featuring the Kaaterskill Rail Trail, a 1.5 mile rails to trails project on the old Ulster & Delaware Railroad.
Rain Barrel Workshop Cornell Cooperative Extension of Greene County provided the rain barrel workshop at Sugar Maples in Maplecrest.
Greene County Sportsmen Federation Tree Planting
The Greene County Sportsmen Federation sponsored a riparian planting project on the East Kill with students and teachers from Windham-Ashland-Jewett Central School. The planting project will streambank vegetation along 700 feet of the East Kill just below the State Route 296 bridge, which sustained significant damage during Tropical Storm Irene in August 2011.
After the Storm, Comes the Rainbow! Amateur Watershed Photography Exhibit The Catskill Mountain Foundation Gallery in Hunter displayed photographs taken throughout the watershed by mountaintop youth.
Riparian Buffer Planting Project The Catskill Streams Buffer Initiative & GrowNYC Environmental Education Program partnered to plant trees along the Batavia Kill in Hensonville.

Streamside Songs and Melodies Concert 
The Community of Windham Foundation, with support from the NYCDEP and GCSWCD, presented a FREE concert to thank volunteers and their families for all that they have done to make the watershed awareness events a success, and to provide a family centered activity for the public to enjoy. The concert also served as a Memorial Day Remembrance and a celebration of the beginning of the
2012 summer tourism season. The event was held at the VFW Building in Windham and highlighted three musical groups - 77th NY Balladeers, Greene Room Players, and Carver Blanchard from the Horton on the Stream.
