2021 Schoharie Watershed Summit – Virtual Session #2
Saturday, April 17th, 2021

This session is recommended for the following Schoharie Reservoir watershed audiences:
Residents and individuals from the general public who are interested in learning more about invasive pests commonly found in the Catskill Mountain region and their impacts on this region’s forests.

This session will include the following presentation:

What’s bugging our forests? Impacts of invasive pests on the functioning of Catskill forests
Dr. Gary Lovett (Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies)
The Catskills are one of the areas of the country hardest-hit by invasive forest pests. In this presentation, Dr. Lovett will discuss how these pests are likely to change the tree species composition of Catskill forests, and how that will affect the forest ecosystem functions that we depend on, such as storing carbon and protecting water quality. Dr. Lovett will also discuss why so many forest pests get into our country and what we can do about it.

This virtual session will be conducted using the program Zoom. Participants will have the option to interact using audio/video during designated Q&A times as well as the option to use the chat feature during the event. In order to participate you will need to download Zoom on the device that you will be using to participate (e.g., computer, tablet, or smartphone). The majority of the event will include looking at slides shared by the presenter, so we do not recommend participants join using the call-in option only. (Note: Event hosts will be unable to provide technical assistance with using Zoom prior to or during the event. For technical assistance, we recommend that you visit
