Student/Amateur Art Exhibit Opening Reception

Each May, students from schools around the mountaintop submit their artwork for this annual art exhibit. The exhibit ran through the month of May and is open to the public during normal operating hours for the Mountain Top Library.
Spring in Spruceton Photography Walk

Francis X. Driscoll led a guided photography walk along the Westkill Stream in the Spruceton Valley area of Lexington. Fran showed how he has gotten some of his award-winning shots. This included hands-on instruction, in the field, with camera settings, composition, exposure, depth of field, etc. With emphasis on enjoying and capturing the beauty around us. Participants met at the West Kill Community Hall to carpool to the location, as parking space is limited at the trailhead. All camera types, including cell phones and tablets, were welcome.

Hunter Branch Rail Trail Educational Walk & Talk

Meet at 300 Ski Bowl Road, Hunter, NY
Members from the Hunter Area Trail Coalition led this easy walk (approximately 1.5 miles) on the former Hunter Branch railroad bed adjacent to Ski Bowl Road in Hunter. Participants learned about the history of this branch of the railroad, the plants and animals that can be seen along the old railroad, and the growing trail network in the Town of Hunter with future connections to the Villages of Hunter and Tannersville.*Note this event was rescheduled to Sunday, May 13th, due to rain.

Bog Tour

Discover bogs of the Catskills with the area's preeminent forest historian. Mike Kudish led a short walk into the Arboretum's Spruce Glen where participants learned about bog ecology and history. If conditions permit, we may assist Mike in taking a peat core sample to help determine the bog's age and evolution. *Note this event was rescheduled to Saturday, June 2nd, due to rain.

Mountain Top Arboretum's Volunteer Appreciation Day and Native Shrub Planting

A day to thank the Mountain Top Arboretum volunteers and invite new participants. Dan Snider, of the Catskill Regional Invasive Species Partnership, spoke on invasive shrubs, and participants discussed and planted beautiful native shrub alternatives (in pre-weeded and pre-dug holes)! Participants stayed on for a picnic lunch and tours of the almost-completed timberframe Education Center which features 21 native tree species.
